About .com domains

Questo testo non è ancora stato tradotto nella tua lingua, quindi stai leggendo l'originale inglese.

.com is the original commercial top-level domain. It was delegated in 1985, it is open to anyone anywhere, and it still holds more registrations than every other extension combined. That is most of what makes it valuable and all of what makes it hard: the name you want has probably been taken since before you thought of it.

Who runs it

The registry is Verisign, under a contract with ICANN. Verisign does not sell domains - it operates the database and the authoritative name servers. You buy through a registrar, which is why the same .com costs different amounts depending on where you buy it, and why the price table above is worth reading before you click.

What it costs to keep

Two numbers matter, and only one of them repeats. The registration price is what you pay for the first year and is often discounted to win the sale. The renewal price is what you pay every year after that, and it is the number that decides what a name costs over its life. A first year at a promotional rate followed by nine renewals at list price is nine tenths list price.

Verisign's wholesale .com price is capped by its ICANN contract, but the cap has allowed a rise for several years running, and registrars pass it on. A .com is not a domain whose price falls.

Who can register one

Anyone. There is no local presence requirement, no documentation, no industry restriction - the practical difference from a ccTLD like .de or .com.tr, which can ask you to prove where you live or trade. Registration terms run from one to ten years, and you can extend up to ten years at any point.

Transfers, expiry and the windows around them

A .com can move between registrars sixty days after it is registered and sixty days after a previous transfer. The move needs the authorisation code from the losing registrar and it adds a year to the registration - a transfer is never a way to escape a renewal.

When a .com expires it does not become available that day. It goes through an auto-renew grace period, then a redemption period of about thirty days where only the original registrant can recover it, at a fee well above a renewal, and then a five-day deletion window before it drops. Recovering a name is always more expensive and less certain than renewing it, which is the entire argument for expiry alerts.

When something else is the better answer

A .com you have to spell out loud, hyphenate, or misspell to get is worth less than a clean name on another extension. If the exact match is gone, compare it honestly against the alternatives in the catalogue rather than buying the nearest thing with the right ending.

Domande frequenti

Who can register a .com domain?

Anyone, anywhere. .com has no residency, citizenship or business requirement, and no documents are checked at registration. That is the practical difference between it and country-code extensions like .de or .com.tr, which can require a local presence.

How much does a .com domain cost?

It depends entirely on the registrar, which is what the table on this page compares. Look at the renewal column rather than the registration one: the first year is often discounted to win the sale, and the renewal is the price you actually pay every year afterwards.

How long can I register a .com for?

From one to ten years, and you can extend at any time up to a maximum of ten years total. A longer registration does not make a name cheaper per year at most registrars, but it does remove nine chances to forget to renew.

Can I transfer my .com to another registrar?

Yes, sixty days after you register it and sixty days after any previous transfer. You need the authorisation code from your current registrar and the domain must not be locked. The transfer adds one year to the registration, so you are paying for a year rather than paying to move.

What happens when a .com domain expires?

It stops resolving, but it does not become available immediately. There is a grace period, then a redemption period of roughly thirty days in which only the original registrant can restore it for a fee much higher than a renewal, then a short deletion window before it is released. Renewing on time is always cheaper than recovering.

Does .com support WHOIS privacy and DNSSEC?

Both. DNSSEC is supported by the registry and can be enabled through any registrar that offers it. WHOIS privacy is a registrar service rather than a registry one, so whether it is free, paid or unavailable depends on where you buy - and registrant details are redacted in public WHOIS by default regardless.

Is a .com always better than a newer extension?

No. A .com is the most recognised ending there is, but a hyphenated or misspelled .com that you have to spell out loud is worth less than a clean, short name on another extension. If the exact match is taken, compare it against the alternatives rather than buying the nearest available .com.
